Chapter 13: Grandparents

Throughout chapter 13, Grandpa Joad was not feeling so good and we could tell by now that he wasn't going to make it any further on the journey to California. When he Pa passes away, they bury him with great honor; however, Grandma Joad is now all alone. My family has a saying that goes along the lines of, "Once an elderly spouse dies, the other spouse is bound to quickly follow after." As a result, I predict that Grandma Joad is going to pass away soon. What do/did you guys predict Grandma Joad's future to be?

  1. I actually do see Grandma Joad passing away very soon. I noticed as towards the end of the chapter it stated "On her mattress, away from the fire, Granma whimpered softly like a puppy. The heads of all turned in her direction. Ma said, 'Rosasharn, like a good girl go lay down with Granma. She needs somebody now. She's knowin', now.' "
Either that or maybe she might fall into a depression as most people at an old age do. But with the fact that she's very religious and could cling onto her beliefs for comfort, I highly doubt that depression will stay for very long. Also, the preacher's there so he could help out too.

  2. I have a feeling Grandma Joad is going to make it. Unlike her husband, Grandma wanted to go California. She is also very energertic for her age and like you said she will cling to religion for comfort. I think she will overcome depression with the help of Rosasharn.

  3. I agree with Cynthia on the idea that she may pass away very soon as well. Since the family will probably go through so many difficulties on their way to California, she won't be able to withstand all the hard work. I think she is going to get sick like Grandpa and then pass way.

  4. It was truly sad to have grandpa die, knowing that will have an impact on grandma and possibly give her depression or start to feel bad like giselle said
