Christmas and his past.

Now that we are going back into Christmas' background and what he has gone through, I'm sort of thinking that he is (later in life) just yearning for love and acceptance. He has a really tough life and I think that maybe he acts the way he does because of how people used to treat him but at the same time he just wants to be loved and be accepted by his double race and the way he is. I think he just because a tough person because of his experiences through life and he holds a grudge against women because of the impact that all the girls in his life have made. I'm just really interrested in this character and I think that the couple of chapters that we have been reading really helped me undestand him a bit more.

  1. From: Jessica Yanez - I have to agree. Christmas has gone through a lot in his past. He has had to deal with problems that not everyone went through. Situations with Bobbie and both Mr. And Mrs. McEachern has made his life complicated as he grows up and it is interesting to know why he is who he is.

    1. Yeah! They shaped him and the person he became was based on all the people who treated him harshly throughout his childhood and teen years.

  2. I agree with them it's kinda sad seeing how he didn't get much loves and when he does it seems to back fire on him and leaving him even more broken, causing him to go back to being angry.

  3. Well people's past affects the way that they become later in life, since he was abused and mistreated having no way to show emotion because he'd been seen as weak it caused to him to be "closed in" and angry because his emotions cant truly be expressed.

  4. Yes , mainly when people don't feel or receive love they tend to isolate themselves. Which maybe that's why in the beginning of the novel Christmas is so isolated.

  5. Good analysis. We can look at all of the Joe Christmases in our world this way. We are more aware of it possibly than they are. So is there any hope for this character?

    1. I think that there is hope for them but they just don't allow themselves to change and be changed. They have gotten so used to a constant rejection and being outcasts that they don't feel like they can ever be happy.

  6. Joe Christmas is an interesting character and I feel he keeps the story going. His personality and behavior makes the book intriguing.

  7. I definitely believe the lack of love given to him as a child plays a huge role in how he is now, and all he is yearning for as Alexia excellently stated:) , is love and acceptance. Children usually turn out unhappy and hard to understand when they aren't given any love, so that could be understood.
